VEGETABLE ASSIGNMENT
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Select an herb and vegetable bed that you will be responsible for the entire semester.
2. You will also select the vegetable from the planting guide that can be found on the travis county master gardener site. (http://tcmastergardeners.org). Go to the Broccoli to Butterfly book and page 6 will have the planting guide and pages 7-11 will help you design your bed.
3. Draw a plan for your garden. Let me look at it before you start outside. I will need a supply list so that I can get the transplants and seeds that you need.
4, Before you begin to plant, you will need to give the plants the very best growing conditions available. You will be graded on the quality of your veggies and herbs. In other words, your veggies and herbs should meet all of the acknowledged characteristics set by TAMU. You can find these on the aggie horticulture web site. (aggie-horticulture.tame.edu) Look under the vegetable and fruit link.
1. Type of cultivars best for the area, cultivars you will be planting
2. Growth needs - soil, water, temperature, light and etc.
3. Possible diseases and pests you may encounter and what to do about them. (You may only use the organic method)
4. Planting depth and space needed.
5. Maturation date (when will they/it be ready to harvest)
6. Ideal characteristics
5. Record the above information in your composition book
ITEMS THAT WILL BE GRADED:
1. Bed design (did you follow your drawn bed design?)
2. Cleanliness of the bed (weeds, pests and etc)
3. Color (is the color healthy and meet the standards set by A&M?)
4. Size of veggies and herbs (are they the optimal size for consumption?0
5. Taste
6. Texture
6. Keep a running journal on the observations of your gardens. There should be an entry every day.
